Dear United Nations,
I am writing this letter concerning the Rwandan Genocide of the year 1994.As the United Nations, I was assured your purpose of forming was to represent all countries and to reach out to countries in need and prevent future wars and controversies. I have done my research and the United Nations Organization Website states its purpose is to bring all the nations of the world together to work for peace and development, based on the principles of justice, human dignity and the well-being of all people. I do not believe that all of the manslaughter and deaths during the genocide is justified in anyway and was not in the well-being or safety of anyone. The once peaceful, loving and beautifully united African country was damaged by the European imperialist who took it a little too far. I am not against imperialism in any way and do not blame the genocide for it, as the genocide had many other contributing factors. But I do strongly believe in reaching out to help a suffering country caused not only by imperialism, but the corruption of the President and the prejudice that was growing at the time. Something, actually anything could have been done to save the millions of lives lost in 1994. I am no major part of the system and I am not a representative of any country in the UN, as I am a regular person, concerned with the reasoning of the United Nations. I would like to be able to trust that the UN is doing their job. Lutheran priest Martin Niemoller famous quote says, “… and when they came for me there was no one left to speak up.” I strongly believe this quote serves as a lesson. The next time a country, big or small, is in need and suffering like Rwanda once was, I hope with all my heart , you will stick with you purpose and help them out.
Regards,
Ashley G.
